End of Year Roundup: Baby Animals

This year was full of chicks, pufflings and a sea turtle hatchling! We welcomed many different species of birds in exhibits throughout our building, and received our newest loggerhead.

In February, cockatiel chicks joined the Australia: Wild Extremes exhibit! To ensure the best upbringing for these birds, staff hand-reared them off exhibit. After months of behind-the-scenes care, the chicks learned to eat on their own and were soon released among the other birds.

Over the summer, three puffin chicks—known as pufflings—hatched in our Sea Cliffs exhibit. This was the first time that more than two chicks have hatched in a single breeding season at the Aquarium! These chicks, nicknamed Gnocchi, Viola and Willow, joined the other puffins on exhibit after receiving care from their respective parental pairs.

Earlier this fall, an imperial pied pigeon chick arrived in Australia: Wild Extremes exhibit. This was the second pied imperial pigeon chick to hatch at the Aquarium. Additionally, red-capped cardinal chicks hatched in our Upland Tropical Rain Forest exhibit!

We recently received our latest charge from the Loggerhead Head Start Program! Every year, we raise a loggerhead sea turtle and then release it back into the ocean. This new loggerhead will be living in its new exhibit home in the new year.

Stay tuned as we continue to recap the past year’s milestones!
