The National Aquarium is saddened to share that Latte, the grey rescue seal, passed away after an unexpected seizure event this past weekend. A full necropsy (an animal autopsy) was performed to determine the factors that may have contributed to Latte’s quick decline.
Final results are pending, but preliminary findings point to a congenital defect that caused a blockage in her esophagus that prevented blood from flowing from her abdomen to her heart, causing a shortage of oxygen to reach her brain.
The sudden loss of Latte is a difficult reminder of the reality of caring for rescued animals. Our experienced Animal Rescue and Animal Health teams provided extensive care for Latte, and are devoted to providing the highest-quality care to every animal that comes through our doors.
Our Animal Rescue and Animal Health teams continue to treat the two seals in our care, Marmalade and Lox.
